Farscape "Terra Firma": Evil and Technology Sharing

Farscape Executive Producer David Kemper is responsible for what John Crichton says in Farscape episodes. In the episode "Terra Firma" he had Crichton arguing a position that I find deeply irresponsible and naive. Picture alien technology hundreds or thousands of years more advanced beyond that of planet Earth. Then picture that technology being shared with all the peoples of the planet Earth. This is what Crichton advocated in the otherwise excellent "Terra Firma" episode.

Does this argument make sense? Move the argument into outer space and check for the consistency of Farscape's position on technology sharing. What we get instead is something closer to Star Trek's Prime Directive with John Crichton playing its advocate at the expense of considerable risk and suffering for himself and others. Crichton is trying to keep wormhole technology from both the Peacekeepers and the Scarrans. Why is that? Because the people who are in charge of those two civilizations have evil intentions. Duh. Are there no brutal ruthless governments or private groups on planet Earth who have evil intentions? Are there no alien technologies that would be incredibly useful for causing major destruction down here on planet Earth? Crichton has been at pains (and so has Kemper with the simulation episode where humans on simulated Earth dissected Rygel) to argue that humans are paranoid and unfair in their treatment of outsiders. But then Kemper brings out his liberal bleeding heart with Crichton's "We Are The World" attitude about sharing incredibly powerful and dangerous technology with the whole human race.

Mr. Kemper, start making sense. Has planet Hollywood become such a politically correct place that only aliens are allowed to be portrayed as having evil intentions? If so, then aren't even being consistent about it. You slipped up with the simulated Earth episode where Americans (and I think Australians) were portrayed as a bunch of paranoid xenophobes. Also, all of Crichton's own criticisms of culture on planet Earth are quite inconsistent with his attitude that extremely lethal alien technology should be shared with one and all.

Update: One other nit to pick on this was the way John father announced at the end of the episode that as the leader of whatever organization he's in charge of he was going to share the alien technology with one and all. Well, that's obviously a decision which is easily overruled by people at higher levels. It was more of a publicity stunt for John's position than anything else. But if John really wanted to get the message out that this was a necessary step he could have appealed directly by making his own speech to the press. Plus, he could have just broadcast some design schematics from Moya's databanks for all to record.

Here's what else is dumb about John Crichton's approach: if he really wanted to see the technology shared far and wide he should have explained why. He at the very least could have told the military that the whole planet needed to prepare defenses against vicious alien species. It seems too incongruous for him to simply say "trust me" and proclaim the sharing of the technology to be necessary. If he really is the capable charismatic figure that the show portrays his character as being then he should have realised that he needed to do a sales job.

Attempt To Save Farscape With A TV Commercial

The SaveFarscape.com reports on a rather dramatic attempt to revive interest in the cancelled Farscape TV show:

I Am Farscape TV Commercial

What began as a simple idea posted by KimRB in the “Do It Yourself Media” thread, then morphed into a proof-of-concept video posted by Beowulf at http://homepage.mac.com/beowulf/farswitch/iMovieTheater30.html, is now a “Realized Reality” through the efforts of the entire Scaper community.

The “I Am Farscape” television commercial, http://homepage.mac.com/~beowulf/iamfarscape/, was completed by Beowulf in late October and duped onto beta sp tapes (a standard format in the TV industry), in early November by KimRB. Many of the tapes are already in the hands of cable TV companies across American, with the rest arriving soon.

Originally targeted at 15 US cities, the "Do It Yourself Media" team found that, after funding was approved by the FWA, they could afford 16 cities. Then Scapers Loco2, Akimbo, and Kithylara stepped up to sponsor airing the commercial in their respective cities, Lexington (KY), Cleveland (OH), and San Diego (CA), bringing the target city total to 19. Everyone was floored when Dominar of Action volunteered to add five more cities (Tampa, FL; Salt Lake City, UT; Detroit, MI; Pittsburgh, PA; Minneapolis, MN), upping the ante to 24 cities! The commercial will air in the following 24 cities the week of November 24:

Atlanta, GA
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Cleveland, OH
Dallas, TX
Denver, CO
Detroit, MI
Hartford, CT
Houston, TX
Lexington, KY
Los Angeles, CA
Miami, FL
Minneapolis, MN
New York, NY
Philadelphia, PA
Phoenix, AZ
Pittsburgh, PA
Salt Lake City, UT
San Diego, CA
San Francisco, CA
Seattle, WA
St. Louis, MO
Tampa, FL
Washington DC

In many of those cities, the ad may air only once, and it may be in the middle of the night on an undisclosed channel. But that’s okay, because the goal of this project is to draw mainstream media attention to our cause. Toward that end, at the same time as the commercial tapes were being produced and shipped, Scapeartist and the FWA PR crew worked with the “Do It Yourself Media” folks to craft a killer press release to announce the airing of this first ever fan-produced, fan-funded television commercial.

On November 17, Scapers came together to stuff and address 200 packets containing the press release and a video CD of the commercial and all 22 of the individual web spots from http://homepage.mac.com/~beowulf/farswitch/. This packet is now on its way to the leading national television news organizations, and to local television news stations in the 24 target cities. And now, in the final stage of this epic effort, the Scaper community is once again coming together to mail the press release to print and radio media all across America.

So mark the week of November 24th on your calendar, and keep your eyes and ears peeled for stories about this effort which may appear in your local newscasts, newspapers, and on local radio. Have a blank video tape ready to capture stories that may appear on local newscasts in your area. And finally, keep checking back here for breaking news as Scapers write a new page in science fiction fan history!

DS

I really hope they succeed in this. Farscape is a better show than any science fiction show currently in production.

Farscape cancelled by Sci Fi channel

Being a science fiction TV show fan means never having to say you aren't disappointed. Farscape is (or shall I say was) my favorite science fiction TV show. Of course this means that it has to go thru periods where its not shown at all and at least one season got delayed for months (how else to assure that it experiences some loss of the audience that has built up). With the Sci Fi Channel supposedly committed to both a 4th and 5th seaons and with the 4th season recently completed airing and with talk of the events of the next season showing up on on-line chats a casual observer might have been optimistic about the 5th season.

There was a reason for pessimism: Farscape got bumped out to 10 PM after Stargate SG-1. When shows move to Friday from other nights or move to later times its usually a reason to get suspicious. So I certainly was concerned. The concern turns out to be justified: The Sci Fi Channel has decided to cancel Farscape. This is just no fun.

Anyone know whether the Jim Henson Company has any chance of putting together a syndication distribution for a new season of Farscape? Perhaps on USA Network or TNT? After all, Stargate SG-1 was distributed in some other fashion before coming to the Sci Fi Channel.

So will we ever know whether the Scarens will attack the Peacekeepers? What about John and Aeryn? What about John's getting back to planet Earth?
